Singapore PR Renewal Requirements

Singapore PR Renewal Requirements

And the Common Misunderstanding

This is a concept that can be pretty confusing if you are not used to the process. The permanent residency itself does not expire and lasts for the rest of your life. However, your re-entry permit expires at least every five years, sometimes sooner.

Travelling outside of Singapore without a re-entry permit or a current REP that will expire soon is extremely risky as you can lose your permanent residency that way.

It is essential that you have proof of your individual income tax contribution in order to renew your re-entry permit. There should be no history of trouble with Singapore law. You should be able to provide evidence of your Central Provident Fund contribution during the period that you’ve had your re-entry permit for. How long you stay in Singapore during the time of your re-entry permit will also have an impact, possibly on how long your permit is renewed for.

What Is A Re-Entry Permit

When travelling out of Singapore as a Singapore permanent resident, you must have a valid re-entry permit in order to retain your Singapore permanent residency (PR) status. If you leave Singapore without your valid REP, then you will lose your status as a Singapore permanent resident.

If you do not travel, it is technically not necessary for you to maintain a REP, but if you then plan to travel, you should prepare to have your REP application declined. So it is always best to maintain your REP as far as possible, even if you do not travel regularly. While it is not essential for you Singapore permanent residence, it is essential for travelling as Singapore permanent residents.

When Do You Need To Have Your REP Renewed?

You should start the renewal process at least three months before your current REP expiry date. You can apply on the e-REP (Electronic Re-Entry Permit System) on the ICA website. If your REP renewal is too late and the permit has already expired, then you should apply in person at the ICA office. An appointment can be made online.

The renewal of the REP is generally quite fast, so you will not be spending too much time waiting for feedback from the Checkpoints Authority (ICA), especially if you use the e-PR system and your SingPass account. Most people who complete an online application receive feedback within one working day if they do not travel often.

Singapore PR Eligibility and Singapore PR Renewal Criteria

A REP renewal requires a PR status and an appropriate valid travel document. So far, there is no official statement listing criteria or requirements for Singapore permanent resident renewals. There are some mandatory documents and other relevant documents that should be included in your application.

You should already be a Singapore PR and should have all your valid travel documents required ready when you complete the application online. Your tax statements will need to be submitted along with a marriage certificate or identity card of your spouse, if applicable.

You should also include your last completed qualification certificate, your proof of employment, and if you are under 21, you should also include your parent’s ID card and birth certificate. The most important part is to complete application form 6, which you can download from the ICA website.

For individuals who have stayed in Singapore during their permit period, the approval of renewal will likely be completed within one working day. The application process is relatively quick as well, most people with Singapore permanent residence report that it only takes a few minutes to complete.

If there is any uncertainty regarding additional documents, you should consider contacting SPIC for assistance. We can help you at any point in the application and have a deep understanding of the Singapore PR renewal requirements.

Renewal of Singapore PR

Renewal offices usually consider some general elements when they receive a renewal request from a Singapore permanent resident.
  • Are you working in Singapore?
  • Are you receiving a salary in Singapore?
  • How many days have you spent in Singapore as a permanent resident?
  • How much tax are you paying based on your salary?
If you are working in Singapore, you will need to submit any of the required supporting documents listed below:
  • Singapore Income Tax Notice of Assessment for the last full year.
  • A statement from your CPF Contribution History for the last full year.
  • A letter from your employer in Singapore stating the position you have in the company, your monthly salary, and your date of employment. The letter must not be older than one month and must be addressed to the Controller of Immigration.
If you are self-employed, a business partner, or an entrepreneur in Singapore, you need to submit your own supporting documents:
  • Your Business Registration Certificate issued by the Singapore Instant Information Service, Account and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA); or
  • Singapore Income Tax Notice of Assessment for the last year.

Steps for Renewal of Singapore PR

Your first step is to visit the Singapore PR renewal platform online, where you can renew your re-entry permit. Then you submit the application on the E-REP system with your SingPass account before your current re-entry permit expires.

The process of the renewal will take about five working days. If your REP renewal is not approved, then you can appeal in person at the ICA office. Remember to book an appointment online before coming to the office.

Just before your Singapore permanent resident (PR) status expires, you will receive a letter from the Immigration checkpoints Authority (ICA). It is best to always respond to this letter.

Remember that your Singapore PR Re-entry permit is the part of your Singapore PR that must be renewed. Singapore PR status depends on your re-entry permit. You do not renew any other element of your Singapore PR status. There is also a fee to be paid for your new Singapore PR REP, which can be paid in several ways, including internet direct debit or VISA/MasterCard payment.

If the Checkpoints Authority (ICA) granted Singapore pr status to you and you got your REP successfully renewed, then you should continue working on your contribution to society. Keep your income tax notices, your Blue Singapore identity card, your old Employment pass, any valid travel document you used, and all new highest qualification certificate you may get.

These will come in handy for your next Singapore PR renewal or your Singapore citizenship application.

Can my Valid Re-Entry Permit Renewal Application be rejected?

Singapore PR renewals can be rejected under certain circumstances. If you are not employed by the time your Singapore PR needs to be renewed, then you can be rejected as there might be a fear that you are no longer contributing to Singapore society.

This only applies if you are below retirement age. In the case of retirement age, your past contributions are considered.

More often than not, if you travel outside of Singapore for a long time, your REP will be granted for a shorter period of time. For example, less travelling might result in a five-year renewal, but if you have travelled a lot, you might only receive one year.

This is done because the Singapore government wants to ensure that every Singapore permanent resident is adding to their community and the economy; they must be an asset it they intend to leave Singapore, or there is a fear that they are spending so much time abroad that they do not add to the community anymore, then it does not make sense for Singapore permanent residence status to be maintained.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Will It Take To Know If The Singapore PR Renewal Is Successful?

If you are staying in Singapore regularly and not travelling much, then the Checkpoints Authority will likely only take one working day to process your application online. It is common to wait up to five working days, but please note that some applications, very rarely, take up to six weeks to process.

In order to keep the process short for your Singapore PR application, be sure to submit all additional documents required, use the e-PR system to renew your REP online, and apply well in advance of the expiry date of your current permit so that the approval date might overlap.
